The Atheist Delusion - Part II | Isaiah 40:12-31

Francis Bacon, often called the Father of Modern Science, believed that both God’s Word (the Bible) and God’s Works (Nature) reveal truth. He declared, “True knowledge is knowledge by causes.” Compare that with Charles Darwin's "Origin of Species," which does not explain the origin of the universe. Even physicist Stephen Hawking admitted, “Almost everyone now believes that the universe, and time itself, had a beginning at the Big Bang.”
Until the time of Albert Einstein, atheists comforted themselves with the false idea that the universe was eternal and therefore needed no cause. That view is now thoroughly rejected. Why? Because the Bible’s opening words: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1).
Proof #1: The Cosmological Argument. If the universe had a beginning, it must have had a cause. This is the law of causality, the bedrock of science: every finite thing is caused by something outside itself. Supporting evidence includes the Second Law of Thermodynamics (entropy), the expansion of the universe, cosmic background radiation from the Big Bang, the “great galaxy seeds” discovered in space, and Einstein’s theory of relativity, which points to an absolute beginning of time, space, and matter. Dr. Norman Geisler summarized this evidence with the acronym SURGE. Don’t be intimidated—these laws are logical and easy to grasp once explained.

In Isaiah 40, God asks His prophet 15 questions that highlight His majesty. Scripture shows us that God alone created the universe. He is omnipotent, all-powerful—imagine the vast Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic Oceans. The prophet tells us God measured them in the hollow of His hand and poured them into place. Scholar R. N. Whybray wrote: “He (God) is depicted as a craftsman, making the tiny universe at His bench; He needs only a handful of water and of dust carefully measured and weighed out.” God, perfect in wisdom, builds galaxies as easily as a man assembles a model airplane. “To whom then will you liken Me, or whom shall I be equal? says the Holy One” (Isaiah 40:25).
History shows the futility of unbelief. The French atheist Voltaire boasted that Christianity would be destroyed in his lifetime. Yet twenty years after his death, the Geneva Bible Society purchased his house and used it to print Bibles by the thousands. Before he died, Voltaire confessed, “I wish I had never been born!” Thomas Paine, who came to America in 1787, wrote The Age of Reason to attack the Bible. By 1809, he was a bedridden invalid, dying bitter and alone. Meanwhile, the Bible he despised has remained the world’s bestseller to this very day.
